History

The Roots

Earthing Risk Management was founded following National Grid’s decision to close its R&D facility at Leatherhead.

2002

The company was founded by Neil Pilling along with a number of other ex-National Grid employees in 2002 and initially provided earthing services to NG.

Growth

Since that time ERM’s client base has grown to include DNOs, renewables, railway and gas industries and power stations in addition to transmission.

Bigger team, more services

From an initial five employees, ERM grew to fourteen and our range of services expanded to include Impressed Voltage, Lightning Protection and Pipeline Interference Studies.

Industry Leaders

ERM continues to participate in Industry Standards groups, and notably had a major input to the National Annexes in BS EN 50522, in particular the application of quantified risk assessment to earthing systems.

The Company also uses its specialist knowledge to provide earthing and lightning protection training to several sectors of industry.

Joining the LSTC family

In 2017 the Company was purchased by LSTC to complement their portfolio and Matthew Taylor, who has been with ERM since 2005, took over as Managing Director. Neil continues to work for ERM as a consultant.
