Earthing Design & Design Verification

ERM has been providing earthing design and design verification services since 2002. Earthing system performance is analysed using a combination of site measurements and computer modelling.

To give the best assessment and service, ERM provides the following:

  • ERM has the complete suite of CDEGS software available with engineers qualified up to CDEGS Level 3 (most advanced level).
  • Independent design advice – ERM does not provide earthing installation.
  • Information on earth impedance, EPR, touch and step voltages, transfer voltages, third party impact, conductor currents, EMF, induced voltages and currents, fence voltages and soil surface voltages.
  • Fault current distribution calculations are conducted to ensure designs are not over-engineered.
  • Third-party interference managed and minimised.
  • Quantified risk assessment techniques applied for challenging design environments.
  • CAD drawings.
  • Installation support and advice.
  • Independent commissioning tests.

In depth analysis may be used to engineer efficient placement of electrodes to reduce the impact of Earth Potential Rise (EPR) at sensitive locations around a substation site. To carry out such analysis, ERM owns the full range of CDEGS software, allowing us calculate earth impedance, earth potential rise, touch and step voltages, third party interference, electromagnetic coupling, EMFs and transient responses.
